Understanding the 8 Moon Phases
Each lunar cycle unfolds through eight recognised phases, each representing a different point in the Moon’s journey. From the darkness of a New Moon through to the illumination of the Full Moon and the gradual return towards darkness, the complete lunar cycle takes approximately 29.5 days.

New Moon
The beginning of the lunar cycle. The New Moon is associated with intention, possibility, reflection and new beginnings.
Waxing Crescent
The Moon begins growing in light, symbolising hope, intention, development and the first steps towards something new.
First Quarter
Half of the Moon appears illuminated. This phase is associated with action, decisions, momentum and overcoming challenges.

How do I find the Moon phase on my birthday?
Enter your birth date into the Moon Phase Calculator above. For a more precise result, you can also enter your birth time and location. The calculator will show the Moon phase for that moment along with its illumination and lunar age.
Why does my location matter?
Your location helps determine the correct local time and how the Moon should be displayed from your part of the world. The illuminated portion of the Moon can appear differently oriented when viewed from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
Does the time of birth or event matter?
It can. The Moon is continuously moving through its lunar cycle, so its age and illumination change throughout the day. A date close to the transition between two phases may produce a different phase depending on the time.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
You can leave the time field blank. Kjahli’s calculator will use midday for that date and location. If you later discover the exact time, you can enter it to refine your result.
